Together, in an extraordinary collaboration, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) are partnering to illuminate the shadows surrounding mental health and shatter the stigma that burdens the Black community.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated (DST) is a private, nonprofit organization that provides assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. Since its founding in 1913, over 350,000 women have been initiated into the organization. Together, this group of women boldly confront the challenges of the Black community through Five-Point Programmatic Thrusts.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. NAMI provides advocacy, education, support and public awareness so that all individuals and families affected by mental illness can build better lives.
In 2020, suicide was the third leading cause of death for Black or African American people aged 15-24 3
Historically, mental health has been stigmatized in many communities, especially in Black communities. By joining forces, we embark on a transformative journey, creating clearer pathways toward mental health empowerment for Black communities where individuals and families get connected to resources early and receive the best and most equitable care.
Our transformative partnership is a catalyst for change, providing invaluable resources, training and unwavering support to all chapters that are driving the charge for individual and community care.
Chapters are charged with hosting three Sharing Hope Community Conversations, promoting NAMI Support Groups, joining FaithNet efforts, forming and/or joining a NAMIWalks team and participating in other mental health events.
Our goal? To equip members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated with the skills and confidence to make a profound impact on mental wellness.
“The goal of this partnership is to reach more people in the Black/African Ancestry community and provide access to early support, as well as the best possible care, for people without fear or judgment.”
– Daniel H. Gillison Jr., NAMI CEO
“Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is committed to serving our communities and making a difference. By partnering with NAMI, we can elevate our impact in addressing mental health disparities and bring about real change for our members and the communities we serve and represent.”
– Elsie Cooke-Holmes, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated National President and Chair, National Board of Directors
As we embark on this extraordinary collaboration, we invite all members and chapters to be part of a movement that will shape the landscape of mental health in the Black community.
Our partnership is an unwavering commitment to create a future where every individual feels seen, heard and supported on their journey toward well-being.
